It has been said that neonicotinoids are safe for humans because their receptors are shaped differently from those of insects, but this myth is now being challenged.

東京女子医科大学東医療センターの平久美子医師は、お茶によるこんな症例を語ってくれた。ネオニコの人体への影響に関する研究の第一人者である。
「10年以上も前ですが、緑茶を飲んで痩せようと一日に何リットルも飲むのが流行ったことがありました。当時、急に手が震ふるえる、不整脈もすごい、目がうつろでフラフラ、食欲がない、心臓がバクバク、そんな患者さんがたくさん来られたんです。
お茶のせいではないかと疑い、飲むのをやめてもらうと、数週間でけろっと治りました。まさかと思って、ペットボトルの茶飲料を分析したら、本当にネオニコが検出されたのです。健康のためと思って、せっせと飲んで、病気になっていたのです」
これは急性中毒だから分かりやすいが、ネオニコが厄介なのは、本当の毒性が見えないことである。
ネオニコというのは、私たちがイメージする農薬とはずいぶん違う。
多くの生物は、脳から信号を受けると、神経細胞の先端にあるシナプスなどで電気信号をアセチルコリンに変換して放出し、これがアセチルコリン受容体というところに結合して情報が伝わる仕組みになっている。
人間も含めて、ほぼすべての生物は、アセチルコリンなしに生きていけないと言われる。ネオニコは、昆虫のアセチルコリン受容体にくっついて神経を興奮させ続けることで殺す仕組みだ。
哺乳類ほにゅうるいの受容体は、昆虫とは形が違うのでくっつきにくく、だから人間には安全だと言われてきたのだが、今、その安全神話がゆらいでいるのである。
