Most of the tea grown in Japan is of the “Yabukita” variety.
Yabukita was created by Sugiyama Hikosaburo, who was born in Suruga. In 1908, Sugiyama selected the Yabukita variety from a tea garden that he had created by cultivating bamboo thickets. Yabukita had excellent characteristics in terms of yield, quality, cold resistance, and disease resistance.
This was good news for both the farmers and the tea merchants. It is no exaggeration to say that the current tea industry exists thanks to Yabukita.

お茶の品種 「やぶきた」
日本で栽培されているお茶の多くが「やぶきた」という品種です。
矢吹田を生み出したのは、駿河生まれの杉山彦三郎です。杉山は自ら茶園を経営しながら茶の品種改良に取り組み、明治41年、竹藪開墾して作り上げた茶園から「やぶきた」を選抜しました。「やぶきた」は収穫量や品質、耐寒性や耐病性などについて非常に優秀な性質を持っていたのです。
これは栽培農家にっても茶商にとっても朗報でした。そのため「やぶきた」は全国的にさいばいされるようになり、現在の茶業があるのは「やぶきた」おおかげと言っても過言ではありません。
