Tea Porridge

One of the traditional dishes of Nara is Tea Porridge.

Tea porridge is called “Okaisan” in Nara. It is made by cooking cold rice in boiled hojicha tea, and is characterized by its light texture.

Okaisan

In the old days, many families in Nara cooked rice at night, and in order to eat cold rice warm in the morning, “Okaisan” seems to have become widely popular among households. To make the rice gruel more filling, various ingredients such as sweet potatoes, pumpkins, taro, chestnuts, and oyster cakes were added.

Tea porridge is not widely eaten nowadays, but it seems to be eaten in the countryside.
