Tea leaf saponins have long been known to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, and in recent years, interesting physiological effects such as hypotensive and antiallergic effects have also been revealed. Tea seed saponin has long been known to have expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects, and has also been used to control worms on golf courses and jumbo paddy bugs in rice paddies.

お茶の機能性、サポニン
茶葉サポニンには「抗炎症作用」や「抗菌作用」があることが古くから知 られており、また近年、「血圧降下作用」や「抗アレルギー作用」等の興味ある生理作用も明らかとなってきました。これらの作用はあまり強くはありません が、カテキンの持っている作用を補うものと期待されます。
茶種子サポニンには古くから「去痰作用」や「抗炎症作用」があることが知られて おり、またゴルフ場における「ミミズ駆除」や水田における「ジャンボタニシ駆除」のためにも利用されてきました。
近年の研究により茶種子サポニンの新たな生理作用も明らかとなってきました。それらの中には「アルコール吸収抑制作用」の様に人体に有益な作用の他に、 酵母や植物病原菌に対する「抗菌作用」や「殺ダニ作用」あるいは「植物生長調節作用」など食品産業や衛生関連産業または農業関連産業など幅広い分野への応 用が期待される作用も含まれています。
サポニン成分の最大の特徴は界面活性剤としての性質を持っていることです。そのため ハーブの一種であるソープワートの様にサポニンを多く含む植物は古来より石鹸として用いられてきました。またサポニンの名前の由来も泡を意味する「シャボ ン（サボン）」であると考えられています。
