Caffeine is one of the oldest known alkaloids and is found in coffee, cocoa, and is also abundant in tea. Similar compounds found in tea include theophylline, neobromine, and guanine. Also called purine bases, they have a purine ring and are closely related to nucleic acid metabolism.

The physiological effects of caffeine are, first of all, central nervous system stimulant effects, which include arousal, delayed sleep, reduced alertness, decreased lassitude, decreased fatigue, and improved intellectual work efficiency.

Inotropic effects include expansion of coronary arteries, increase in myocardial contractility, increase in heart rate, and improvement in blood circulation, and diuretic effects include dilation of renal blood vessels and acceleration of urination from the kidneys.
